چکیده

Revised version 29 November 2006 Abstract— We have performed holographic interferometry measurements of the dissolution of the (010) plane of a cleaved gypsum single crystal in pure water. These experiments have provided the value of the dissolution rate constant k of gypsum in water and the value of the interdiffusion coefficient D of its aqueous species in water. D is 1.0×10−9 m s, a value close to the theoretical value generally used in dissolution studies. k is 4×10−5 mol m s. It directly characterizes the microscopic transfer rate at the solid-liquid interface, and is not an averaged value deduced from quantities measured far from the surface as in macroscopic dissolution experiments. It is found to be two times lower than the value obtained from macroscopic experiments.

Pure dissolution kinetics of anhydrite and gypsum in inhibiting aqueous salt solutions

In the context of the study of the wet creep of plasterboards, we have performed digital holographic interferometry measurements of the dissolution of gypsum of various quarries in water and in aqueous solutions of salts inhibiting dissolution, and of the dissolution of anhydrite in water. This technique is carried out in still water and permits to observe directly the reacting solid-liquid int...

Measurement of the pure dissolution rate constant of a mineral in water

We present here a methodology, using holographic interferometry, enabling to measure the pure surface reaction rate constant of the dissolution of a mineral in water, unambiguously free from the influence of mass transport. We use that technique to access to this value for gypsum and we demonstrate that it was never measured before but could be deduced a posteriori from the literature results i...

Measuring the deposited energy from a non-ionizing laser beam in water by digital holographic interferometry

Digital Holographic interferometry is a powerful and widely used optical technique for accurate measurement of variations in physical quantities such as density, refractive index, and etc. In this study, an experimental digital holographic interferometry setup was designed and used to measure the amount of energy changes induced by absorption of radiation from a non-ionizing infrared laser beam...

Holographic interferometry for the study of liquids

Holography is an optical technique enabling to record phase objects. Holographic interferometry uses this faculty to make a phase object interfere with a memory of itself at a preceding time, recorded on a hologram. Interference fringes therefore inform on any variation of the phase of the object. For the study of liquids, these phase changes can result from the evolution of temperature or conc...

Gypsum Dissolution Effects on the Performance of a Large Dam (TECHNICAL NOTE)

Upper Gotvand dam is constructed on the Karun River located in the south west of Iran. In this paper, 2D and 3D models of the dam together with the foundation and abutments were constructed and several seepage analyses were carried out. Then the gypsum veins scattered throughout the foundation ground and also the seepage pattern were included in the models, hence the dissolution law of gypsum, ...
